About Title Check
YouTube's rules it checks
- A title can be up to 100 characters, a description up to 5,000. YouTube's API, which upload tools use, counts the description in bytes, so Title Check counts both.
- Neither may contain < or >.
- Tags: up to 500 characters in all. The commas count, and a tag with a space counts its quotation marks.
- Hashtags: of those in the description, YouTube shows up to three by the title, the ones it judges most engaging. With more than 60, it ignores every hashtag on the video.
- Chapters: the first at 00:00, at least three in order, each at least 10 seconds long.
Lists cut a long title at about 70 characters on a computer, fewer on a phone. That is an estimate, not a YouTube rule.
How to use it
- Paste the title, the description and the tags as they will be on YouTube.
- Fix what is flagged; the counts and the preview change as you type.
- Copy them back into YouTube Studio.
Rules as read on October 3, 2026 from YouTube Help: Edit video settings, YouTube Help: Find playlists & videos using hashtags, YouTube Help: Video Chapters, YouTube Data API: Videos.
Questions
- How long can a YouTube title be?
- 100 characters. Lists cut it at about 70 on a computer, so put the words that matter first.
- Why do my chapters not show?
- The first time must be 00:00, there must be at least three in order, and each must be at least 10 seconds long; Title Check finds the times in your description and checks all of them. Chapters also do not show when a channel has an active strike or the video may be inappropriate for some viewers, and a channel without them yet applies for access to advanced features.
- Which hashtags show above my title?
- YouTube picks up to three of your description's hashtags, the ones it judges most engaging. Title Check counts them, but cannot know which three.
- Is what I type sent anywhere?
- No. The checks run in your browser.
