About EDL Export
What it writes
- A CMX3600 EDL, the format Adobe calls the most widely accepted: a title, non-drop-frame timecode, and one video and one audio event per clip, in order.
- A reel name of up to eight characters per recording, made from its file name, and a FROM CLIP NAME comment with the full name, so the editor can relink the files.
- A COMMENT with each clip's name where you gave one. From a Sucia Studio project, speed changes as M2 lines and freezes as a held frame, the way the editor writes them.
Premiere's own advice for EDLs: one video track, two stereo audio tracks, no nested sequences; transitions, frame holds and speed changes translate.
The cut list
- One clip per line: the in time, the out time, then a name and a reel if you like, separated by commas or tabs. With spaces alone, everything after the two times is the name.
- Times as h:mm:ss.s, mm:ss or plain seconds: "0:01:12.5, 0:01:40, The first fight, cam1".
- A line starting with # is skipped. Clips go into the EDL in the order you list them.
Frame rates
- Choose the recording's rate: 30, 60, 25, 24 or 23.976. The EDL carries no rate of its own, so set the same one in the editor's project.
- At 23.976 the timecode counts 24 frames a second, as CMX3600 does, with the frame numbers the recording's own.
How to use it
- Paste or drop the cut list, or drop the .sstudio project file. Name the title and pick the frame rate.
- Check the preview, download the EDL, and import it in the editor: in Premiere through File, Import; in Resolve through File, Import Timeline.
- Relink the recordings when the editor asks; the file names are in the EDL.
Rules as read on October 9, 2026 from Adobe: Export projects as EDL files in Premiere, Adobe: Supported file formats in Premiere.
Questions
- Which editors open it?
- Any that imports a CMX3600 EDL: Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Avid Media Composer, Final Cut Pro through a converter, and most others.
- Why did my clips not relink?
- The editor matches on the reel name and the timecode. Keep the recordings' file names as they were, set the project's frame rate to the one you chose here, and point the editor at the folder when it asks.
- Does it carry effects, titles or music?
- No. An EDL is the cuts: which part of which recording, in which order, with speed changes and freezes. Everything else is rebuilt in the editor.
- Is anything uploaded?
- No. The file is written in your browser.
